Christmas Eve Fish Feast

Yikes! 22 people for Christmas Eve dinner and not a moment to spare before they come through the door! Is the table set and welcoming? I hope so! Where are those salt and pepper shakers?? Got 'em!

Christmas Eve at our house is the traditional Italian 7 fishes feast. My Mom is of Italian heritage and we truly cook up a lot of food!

But before I get to the food, most importantly, when my cousins walk through the door, we will all be vying to see who gets to sit at "the Grown Up" table. Eating at the this table was a right of passage that came with age! Here's the Grown Up table...

And here's kiddie table...only on this holiday night, with most of us near or over 40, we very well may be arguing over who gets to sit with the kids and not the grown ups! Hee-hee! Which one would you chose??Little neck clams are a big part of our evening as my son works for a clam business each summer and my husband made his way through college clamming...here on on the half shell...

Simmered on the BBQ with olive oil, lemon juice, white wine, s&p, thyme and basil...

And the main dish--crabs and macaroni! The best sauce ever, a Naples delight! There will be none of this left!
After everyone leaves late into the evening, we'll check our little one's letter to Santa... "Why do the elves wear pointy shoes?" she asks...
She'll leave him cookies and milk ...

And, of course, he'll leave a letter for her to read in the morning..."The elves wear pointy shoes because their feet are pointy, of course!"...We'll make sure the gifts are under the tree...
The stockings stuffed and the hearth gate removed so Santa can get down the chimney...

Then it's lights out until the night morning...blow out the candle on your way to bed!

Can't wait until Christmas morning!

Hi Tara,
It looks like you had a wonderful Christmas Eve party. Which table would I have sat at, well the kids table of course. I always sit at the kids table.
I always thought the Elves wore pointy shoes because A). it was stylish and B). They stuffed cotton in the curls for added insulation...ha ha!

This has probably been a difficult Christmas for you so I've been sending up little prayers. I hope you're making it through.

Oh Tara, I can almost smell the fishes. ;) My mom and my aunt were big on the seven fishes; me, not so much. I'll bet yours are super fresh, living where you do...

I hope the New Year brings you peace and joy abounding!

xoxo,
Mary

Oh, and elves wear pointy shoes because they watch a lot of "What Not To Wear," and they want to be just like Stacey London....

Hi Tara!
That's always the issue at our house too! Grown-ups table or kids table. We try to squeeze as many chairs around the dining room table as possible but it never seems big enough. Now that we have 2 granddaughters I'm thrilled to sit at the "kids table" to tend to them and make them smile!! I LOVE this Grandma thing!!
Happy New Year Sweetie! Hugs, Sherry

Hi Tara,
The dinner looks fabulous. We love Italian seafood meals too. And I wouldn't mind sitting at the kids' table; sometimes it's funner! Best wishes for a great New Year.

Hi Tara!

It was hard to leave my sweet little grandbaby behind in Denver but I'll be going back in a few months to baby sit when my DIl goes back to teaching first grade. Then her Mom will come out a few weeks and do the same until the school semester is over for the year and she has the summer off. I'm looking forward to that as Leo will be in the cute smiley age by then.

I've been doing the feast of the 7 fishes since I've been married -- only we have lobster/ calamari sauce and there has to be bacala
(salted cod fish) for my husband, cooked two ways.

This Eve I cooked crab sauce for the first time as we couldn't find fresh calamari in Denver, but I did find big Dungress crabs from the west coast. We also had fried shrimp and stuffed salmon. My husband didn't miss his bacala so much because we had Leo to occupy us most of the time :-)

I hope you enjoy your New Year celebration tonight and that 2009 will bring many blessings to you and your family. It has been a wonderful year of getting to know you my dear blog friend -- peace and love, Pat

I hope you had help with preparing all of that food. I had 20 over Christmas Eve, after working until 4:00pm. It was close but I was prepared and I have a buffet so everyone can come and eat when they want. I could never do the entire 7 fishes. I do more of a 3 or 4 fishes.
