Ode to the Potato Chip

Stuck on a deserted island, other than my family, I would miss three things: pen, paper, and potato chips.

Not having a place to put my thoughts would drive me insane. Not having potato chips would be downright fearsome. How I love the potato chip! A perfect slice of nature, lightly salted, with a satisfying crunch. Crinkled, sour-creamed, bbq style-all win my admiration. True bliss in life is a bag of chips and a great B movie on a Friday night.

And now I am stuck on a desert island! I have sworn (for the summer at least) fiscal and physical responsibility. Doesn’t this include watching what I put into my body? Yes, technically a potato chip is a veggie (by a stretch) but my heart of hearts knows this is not the most appropriate snack.

So, dear Wise Chips Lightly Salted, an ode to you as I bid you adieu for awhile:

So long, dear potato chip
The bane of my existence
I cannot have you now in my life
From you, I have no resistance

I’ll miss our snuggling at night
Watching a favorite old movie
Instead, I’ll eat carrot sticks
While pretending they’re groovy

Fried, baked, crinkled, nachoed
You are not the wisest choice
My thighs, my arms, even my wrists
Appear to have found a voice

For you see, dear chip, you’re not a friend,
As much as I’d like to believe
Because you always end up on my hips
A size 6 I cannot achieve

So in the snack drawer you’ll remain
Much to the dismay of my heart
You are not on any healthy menu
Or a low sodium calorie chart!

P>S> I exercised for 20 minutes. Yuck.

OMG, you had me laughing one minute and the next my mouth was watering while I thought about Wise potato chips. I used to love a bag with a coke. Oh my. I have tagged you for some fun. Please stop by and read all about it, I promise it doesn't involve any potato chips and it is a calorie free post. Karen

Good morning Tara. Enjoyed the poem. For you it's chips, for me chocolate.

I enjoy your blog. You have such a variety of subjects.

So funny ... I could go the rest of my life without a single potato chip in it. I just have a hard time resisting chips of the chocolate variety. (All by themselves ... they don't have to be baked into something.) But I WILL try and resist. Congratulations on the exercise thing.

I have been mulling over the idea of joining you in your wild rampage of responsibility, but I just can't commit yet. I want to but, there's that whole giving things up thing, and then the exercise thing...I just dont know if I can do it. I think about it a lot. Is that a first step? I applaud your public accountability and determination!

You go girl! Yes, potato chips are one of the big baddies, aren't they? Good for you for giving them up. Maybe you'll find a way to live without them forever.

Hi, Tara, thanks for stopping by. I enjoyed your comments about Southerners..I think that's pretty true for the most part. We can be pretty sassy too though!

OH! Potato chips and me go WAY back. I love those things. My new obsession is the Kettle cooked chips, Black pepper & salt. Oh. my goodness..they are so good. I only buy them if they are on sale at Publix, BOGO.

Every workout is a little bit of torture. Make that a lot of torture. Good luck on giving up chips. You'll be my inspiration as I try to cut down on carbs!

Ha! Ha! Tara, you are sooooo funnnnyyy! You have the gift of rhyme and it's so sublime!
Not to torture you at all, but have you even had them dipped in chocolate. They are to die for.
What a fun post! you have brightened my otherwise boring work day. Oops! did I say I was at work?

What a great poem!
I never cared for chips after I moved away from my childhood home I only wanted my hometown chips that were 500 miles away. One year at Christmas that's what my brother sent me. Now that I'm back here the local chip company still makes the best (Mister Bee's) and I can feel your pain!
Good luck with the new responsibility.
Thanks for dropping by today.

You know, I never used to eat potato chips for years and years. I loved them, but I would never buy them. Somehow, they have begun to find their way into my pantry, and if they are in the pantry, they will be in my mouth sooner or later! LOL And from there, it's only a short distance to my hips...

Have a wonderful fourth!

Mary

Tara my sweet...carrot sticks? Surely you jest...I know that they say you can't eat just one potato chip, but really...I could stop at one carrot stick...poor baby, I feel your pain (pardon me while I wipe chip crumbs off my chin...) Tara, come back to the fried side...one little chip won't hurt you...

Chips are a real weakness of mine!! Preferred over chocolate even.. I have been keeping away lately and a good alternative for me has been rice crackers.. taste like a corn chip almost esp.. when I get the late night munchies!! Funny poem.. good luck to you! :) Gx
