Physically & Fiscally Responsible?

Ah, to not be constantly hungry! In my search for Physical and Fiscal responsibility, I have discovered the Hungry Girl website. It’s run by a gal, Lisa, who gives all kinds of great tips on food—what’s new in the supermarket that’s 100 calories or less, how to replace high calorie items in cooking for low, news about nutrition. She has a cookbook out now and you can sign up for her email newsletters (I did!).
But, oh, dear Lisa, you have turned me on to the Dunkin’ Donuts Decaffeinated Iced coffee with skim milk and no calorie sweetener. This little beauty, an oasis of delight on a hot New York Day, is less than 100 calories and my new best friend.

To sit in the sun and sip this delicious aperitif while lounging poolside does more for the soul than I can express. My son comes by and tells me he can’t find his retainer. “No problem, dear!” My husband lets me know minutes later the car has a flat tire. “We’ll get it fixed”, I answer while pleasantly sipping. My eldest daughter lets me know the school called and will not release her grades until she finds and hands in her algebra book (which she swears she handed in on the last day of school). “We’ll find it in your room”, is my breezy response. I am in coffee heaven!

But, yikes, is it fiscally responsible at $1.85 per medium cup? NO!! I had a Dunkin’ Donuts gift certificate given to me on my birthday which is quickly running out. And to stick to my P & F plan, I just cannot logically reason why I should be spending this much on a cup of coffee. Lucky for me, the Hungry Girl website gives a few recipes on how to concoct your own version. But it won’t be the same!

After the card runs out and the last sip is sipped, I’ll be driving west instead of east, turning corners I do not have to turn, just to avoid the alluring, beckoning pink and orange Dunkin’s Donuts sign on Main Street in my town…
Goodbye, dear coffee, please keep my potato chips good company!!

hehehe...fun post, Tara! The Hungry Girl site is great...But that is a LOT of a cup of coffee...and thesedays every penny counts, doesn't it, as many of us pull in our horns a bit. I like sites that give good info as well as alternatives. Thanks for sharing! Your son will be heading to Norway soon, won't he?! Happy Days, my friend ((HUGS))

Hi Tara!
Your DD iced coffee sounds delish! I'm sure you can come up with your own recipe that will taste just as good or better!

It's amazing what enjoyment we get from the smallest things!

I couldn't POSSIBLY go into a Dunkin Donuts and not have a donut... Haven't had one in years.

Tara,

Why not buy the DD coffee and make it and chill it. Then add ice, skim milk and no calorie sweetener. You will also need a box of straws! A 12 oz. bag of coffee should make at least 30 cups of coffee, so it is actually pennies a cup.

Don't you just love my N.E. frugality?

Thanks for sharing good information. I'm working on eating habits and exercise - and wise spending. Not easy.

Thanks for stopping by my blog and for leaving your sweet comments. You asked if the picture of the lake was the view from my home. Oh, how I wish! No, it's the lake where my sweetheart and I recently went camping and fishing. We didn't want to leave. It was gorgeous up there and the fishing was good. Now if I could only move my house up there. . .

oh Tara..you are a funny bunny :P This is so fun to read...ah..diet, it never ever will ends right? Do you know there's tons of slimming centres here, for USD30 - 50 a session, they'll rub, knead and massage you, wrap you in either cold or hot foils and voila..you'll lose 1.5 kgs and at least 10 inches in total. Trust me it works (wink*wink*), the only problem is those stubborn fats pile back when you stop it. Thanks for the reminder, got to go hop on my exercise machine now!! maybe we should both go on a weight loss competition and see who lose more hahaha

Tara, it's a good thing you don't live here in Boston, Dunkin donuts is on every corner and sometimes on both sides of the street. Sound like you are successfully and mindfully achieving your goals. I admire you. Karen

Oh girl - get yourself a Bodum French Press! Your iced coffee will put DD's in the shade then. A little Davinci's sugar free syrup [or just regular splenda], some skim milk - YUM! And way cheaper :)

There's nothing like a good cup coffee unless it's a good cup of tea! But this sounds so delectable...gonna have to look for it next time I go shopping!
